Elvestuen thanks pope for ethical leadership on the climate issue

Climate and Environment Minister, Ola Elvestuen of Venstre (V) thanked Pope Frans for his ethical leadership when they met during a climate conference at the Vatican.

The conference, which took place on Thursday and Friday, is the three year mark of Pope Francis’ ‘Papal Letter Laudato Si’, which deals with the world’s climate and environmental challenges.

“It was special to meet the pope. I conveyed the desire to cooperate on rainforest conservation and aiming to create an intergovernmental initiative for rainforests,’’ said Elvestuen to NTB news.

The climate minister also led a panel during the conference, which had approximately 300 participants, including politicians, religious leaders,and research institutions. The parties discussed the climate targets for the next two years, reinforcing the Paris agreement. and that many countries reach their national climate targets.

The conference at the Vatican was also a precedent of the large climate conference, ‘COP24′, which is being held in the Polish town of Katowice in December.
