Erna Solberg said World War I eliminated romance of war
A hundred years after World War I, we see better where the wreck of the Great War lay, said Prime Minister Erna Solberg of Høyre (H).
The Norwegian Prime Minister is in Paris on Sunday to attend the major international memorial ceremony to mark the centenary of the ceasefire that denoted the end of the First World War.
The ceremony is first and foremost a manifestation of peace, said Solberg.
“It is a reminder of how terrible war is,” said the prime minister, referring to the many millions of soldiers who died in the trenches during World War I.
The World War became a lesson for those who believed war could be a solution and a way to shift the power relationships she believes.
“The First World War removed some of the romance of war from everyone,” said Solberg to NTB news.
The prime minister said she currently sees danger signs in an era of increased pessimism and harder political rhetoric. But any new development is not the reason to fear.
“We have not returned to that situation. This is because we are well-balanced economically and because we have found ways to resolve conflicts,” said Solberg.
“But we must remind each other that this war is something we must not experience again. It’s important,’’ she said.
