Fashion giants claim to be climate neutral by 2050

Fashion companies, H&M, Hugo Boss, Puma, Adidas, and Levi’s will not release greenhouse gasses by the mid-century.

In connection with the UN’s climate summit in Poland, the companies have announced in a joint press release that they will join forces to sharpen their ambitions toward the climate field (giving themselves over thirty years to do so).

A total of 43 garment factories will work to gain a net greenhouse gas elimination of zero by no later than 2050. At the same time, they committed themselves (in an obviously non-binding contract) to reducing emissions by 30% by 2030.

Fashion is one of the industries in the world that releases huge amounts of CO2 every year. According to UN figures, the production of clothing accounts for about 10% of the total emissions in the world.

“The fashion industry is always two steps ahead when it comes to defining world culture, so I’m pleased to see that it also leads to diminishing climate change,” said the UN’s climate spokesperson, Patricia Espinosa, who called the agreement, “unique”.
