The FpU warns the Young Conservatives against protecting LoVeSe

FpU leader Bjørn-Kristian Svendsrud warns the Young Conservatives to vote for lasting protection of LoVeSe. “One has to put knowledge in front of emotion and perception”, the Progress Party politician says.

– If the Young Conservatives advocates lasting protection of LoVeSe (Lofoten, Vesterålen and Senja), it is a historical shift in policy where the party is yielding to pressure from emotions and perceptions, rather than basing their actions on knowledge, says the FpU leader to NTB.

The Young Conservatives’ (Unge Høyre) 54th National Convention started at Gardermoen on Friday. During the meeting they will adopt a revised principle program. Among the matters the youth party is going to decide on, is to say yes or no to petroleum exploration near Lofoten, Vesterålen and Senja (LoVeSe). The majority in the youth party’s program committee made a complete about turn in April, opening for lasting protection of the sectors.

– I am generally concerned that Norwegian youth do not understand the importance of the oil and gas industry. We are of course in a transitional phase where use of energy is going to become greener, but it’s an undisputed fact that natural gas is part of the path leading to a greener society.

Oil better than coal

– That also includes oil, which is considerably better than coal. We have to work to ensure that the oil produced is Norwegian, as oil produced on the Norwegian continental shelf has low emissions. It also contributes to increased value and welfare creation in Norway, Svendsrud adds.

The Young Conservatives will also address a revised climate and environmental policy this weekend. Other points on the agenda are whether Norway is still to remain a monarchy and the legalization of narcotic substances – none, all or so-called soft drugs like Cannabis only.
