Global World Leader Prize awarded to Solberg

Prime Minister Erna Solberg (Conservatives) is the first international leader to receive the award from the Global Citizen organization.

The prize was awarded in front of 80,000 people during the Global Citizen Festival at a soccer stadium in Johannesburg in South Africa on Sunday afternoon. According to Global Citizen, which works to combat poverty by 2030, Solberg has received the award for her tireless work for women’s and girls’ rights.

According to Solberg, the Prize is an award that recognizes Norway’s international commitment.

– It is very nice with a prize. This is a recognition to Norway and the work we do internationally. This applies to our Government, but also to previous Governments that are and have been at work towards achieving international goals. But I will dedicate the prize to all volunteers who contribute in their communities. What we need is that many help highlighting these challenges. I am also pleased that we in the Noric region have companies that want to help achieve the sustainability goals, Solberg tells NTB.

The Prime Minister received the award when she was present at the Global Citizen Mandela100 Concert and on a reception to mark that it’s 100 years since Mandela was born.

Shown around

Solberg is on a two-day-long visit to South Africa, and earlier in the day she visited the farm Liliesleaf. This is the place where Nelson Mandela and most of the other ANC leaders were hiding in the years after the apartheid regime banned the organization in 1960.

During the visit, Solberg was accompanied by former president Kgalema Motlanthe, South Africa’s Foreign Minister Lindiwe Sisulu, as well as the grandson of Nelson Mandela, Kweku Mandela. Solberg was shown around in what is today a museum that illuminates the history of the South African liberation movement. In addition, there is a permanent exhibition showing Norway’s efforts to support the liberation struggle.

Monday, Solberg travels to Angola, Norway’s most important economic partner in Africa. In Angola, the prime minister will have a meeting with President Joao Lourenco, as well as attend the opening of a Norwegian-Angolan business seminar.
