The police must investigate and prosecute hate speech more often than it does today, and more research is needed on those affected by hate speech.

This appears in the Government’s strategy against hate speech, which was released on Monday.

– I think I can see many more statements which are borderline compared to a few years ago, said Prime Minister Erna Solberg as she presented the strategy together with ministers and state secretaries from three different ministries.

She said it is not only in the debate on immigration and integration where it occurs, but also in discussions about wolves and child welfare.

The strategy should make efforts to combat the extreme utterances more systematic, explains the prime minister.

– None of us are naive enough to believe that we can get rid of all hate speech, but we will provide a better network for the people exposed to hate speech.

Police should prioritize hate speech of a criminal nature, and we hope that with more knowledge we will find good mobilising measures, said Solberg to the news agency NTB.

There will also be a website with information about what hate speech is and what to do if you are exposed to it.
