The government wants an end to the ‘quantity discount’ in criminal cases, and propose up to 40 years in prison for the most serious cases where several offenses have been committed.

Ministry of Justice has submitted proposals for amendments to the Criminal Code and the Criminal Procedure Act  for consultation.

– I think that the “quantity discount” in many criminal cases are unduly large. The penalties in such cases must reflect better in terms of the number of offenses the defendant has committed, says Justice and Emergency Minister Anders Anundsen.

He stressed that although it will continue to be the courts that are responsible for determining punishment in each case, it is a political responsibility to determine what punishment levels can be applied.
