The new movie “downsizing” with Matt Damon as the lead,  is helping to boost tourism in Vesterålen by over twenty-five percent.

The movie is recorded in Vesterålen and Lofoten amoung other places, and means a lot for tourism in the areas writes Vesterålens Avis.

– It helps to build up Vesterålen as a destination. It is completely obvious. Just look at the “Lord of the Rings” and what it has meant to New Zealand. And with our special scenic qualities of the ocean,  there are so few places in Europe that can compare, says manager Roy Odd Schøyen of Vesterålen Tourism.

He believes film tourism is something to aim for, but it requires commitment and economy.

– Vesterålen Tourism spends part of the resources of international media. It is important that we get actors who will eventually use Vesterålen actively and promote us.

Between January and May this year the area had 38,000 visitors, an increase of 26.8 percent. It is mostly German tourists that dominate the tourism market. But Danes and Chinese people are contributing to increased visitor numbers as well.

– Many seek the ocean veiws. Tourists want to visit the fjords and have peace, quiet and fresh air. We are a peaceful nation.
