Allowing tourists to fish for king crabs has been an important source of revenue for the tourism industry in Finnmark. Now the Department of Fisheries will double the quota of king crabs that the tourists may catch.

The tourism industry in Finnmark has had a positive development, and has worked systematically to build up king crab as a brand for the county. Now the government wants to develop the tourism industry in northern Norway, the Industry and Fisheries Ministry said in a statement.
Because of this, the Ministry has decided to increase the quota of king crabs set aside for tourist fishing and tourism businesses. In 2017 the quota will increase to a total of  8,000 kilos worth of king crabs, which is the double  of the 4.000 kg of this year.
– The tourism industry is becoming increasingly important for the region and a larger amount of  king crabs for tourist fishing and tourism businesses may contribute to increased revenue and important new jobs,  Ronny Berg (FRP), Undersecretary of Industry and Fisheries Ministry, says.
