Thailand’s former Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn has formally taken over the throne. 64 years old prince was replacing his beloved father Bhumibol place, who passed away in October.
The head of the country’s legislature, Pornpetch Wichitcholchai, had an audience with Crown Prince late Thursday in which he invited him to become king.
This is a formality in keeping with Thai constitution and last step in the process of making the King of state.
– I agree to accept the deceased king’s wishes, to the delight of all the Thai people, said the new king on Thursday just 50 days after his 88 years old father died.
The new king was recognized as “his majesty, King Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebayavarangkun.” He is also known as King Rama X, the tenth monarch in the Chakri dynasty that began in 1782.
Vajiralongkorns father, very popular Bhumibol Adulyadej, who took the throne in 1946, died on October 13th at the age of 88.
King Bhumibol ruled for over 70 years and was regarded as a unifying symbol in a country marked by military coups and political divisions.
In 1972, he designated Vajiralongkorn, his second child and only son, as his successor.
Most thought he would inherit the throne the same day that his father died, but the crown prince asked for extra time to mourn his father before he can take over the position.
