On Wednesday evening Prime Minister Erna Solberg and Mayor of Oslo Marianne Borgen attended the Jewish community and Anti-Racist Center’s celebration of the memory of Kristallnacht.
The celebration consisted of a seminar at Youngstorget followed by a torchlit procession. The seminar began with a lecture by Joav Melchior, Rabbi of the Jewish community in Oslo and discussed the stages leading up to the genocide and the relevance of them today.
The torchlit procession started at 18:00 with subsequent appeals from Prime Minister Erna Solberg (H) and the Mayor of Oslo Marianne Borgen.
During the night between November 9th and 10th of 1938, the armed National Socialist militia (Nazi Party) vandalized Jewish property in Germany and Austria.
Kristallnacht got its name from the colossal amount of shards of broken glass that littered the streets after the rioters rampage.
The events of that night marked the beginning of the systematic persecution of Jews in Hitler’s Germany.
