On Thursday over 30 organizations gathered to voice  their opposition to the government’s proposal of a temporary stay of children who flee to Norway alone.

A total of 37   large and small organizations were behind the petition, among them the Red Cross, UNICEF Norway, Norwegian People’s Aid and Amnesty International Norway.
The Government proposes to grant unaccompanied asylum seekers temporary residence permit until they turn 18, regardless of age and regardless of whether there is a need for protection. Only when they come of age will they get to know if they can stay in the country.
The organizations believe that the proposal doesn’t take important information about the serious consequences the change will mean for children into consideration. Merely providing temporary residence for this group means that children who have fled from insecurity have to continue to live in uncertainty and fear of what will happen to them.
–  Temporary residence robs children of their joy of life and makes them sick. No child should have to live like this,  Save the Children write on their event page on Facebook.
Appeals were made as a part of the demonstration, and all parties in Parliament were asked to vote no to the proposal.
Over 17,000 people have so far signed the Save the Children appeal against the temporary stay and the signatures that were handed over to the parliament during the celebration.
