The government and Immigration and Integration minister Sylvi Listhaug do not want to impose a national ban on garments that cover students’ faces, such as the nikab.
Listhaug writes that the nikab and burqa is a very small problem in schools and other public institutions, in response to a written question from Labour’s Jan Bøhler, says the newspaper VG.
– To the extent that such practices pose challenges, the individual municipality or the individual public authority can find local solutions, and in some cases impose bans .
“For example, Oslo municipality introduced a ban on clothing that completely or partially covers the pupils’ faces”, writes Listhaug .
The Progress party has for several years advocated banning veiling garments in schools, and Bohler says it is remarkable that the government denies that a national ban is a current policy concern.
– This question has also appeared at State colleges, and it is a matter of principle and about putting your foot down against the most extreme fundamentalists.
Our national community should take joint responsibility here , set boundaries and build attitudes, and not push the responsibility over to the local level, said Bohler.
