Hundreds of days — ‘A sober and straightforward standard,’ was immigration minister Sylvi Listhaug’s impression of the Police Immigration Detention Centre on Trandum after visiting.

Behind high fences, barbed wire, and surveillance cameras, immigration and integration minister Sylvi Listhaug (FRP) was ushered from one spartan room to the next in Trandum, beside Gardermoen airport, this Thursday.
“I note that there is a sober and straightforward standard,” the minister summarized after seeing the various departments, wherein 110 inmates await deportation.
A new module with 90 beds is under construction at the moment.

The idea is for nobody to be here for many days, but some people have been waiting for hundreds of days.
“Just this Wednesday, we deported a man who had been here for 502 days,” said the dormitory manager Johan Throndsen from PU.
The explanation for this is that no one may be deported if their identity if unclear. As a result, many people end up waiting far longer than originally intended.
Throndsen says that it has been one year since rioting in Trandum. The aftermath has been calm, he said.
Listhaug believes that there is a simple way out of this situation for those stuck waiting for hundreds of days.
“They can disclose their identity,” she says.

Met none
Listhaug met no prisoners during her visit to Trandum.
“I would happily have met some, but PU did not arrange it this time,” she says.
Listhaug reports being impressed by the staff’s efforts at Trandum.
