Immigration Minister Sylvi Listhaug believes the claim by the Washington Post that she is a European Donald Trump reflects the newspaper’s incompetence.
– It is nothing new to me that one wants to stamp both me and Progress Party with labels. In this case, it is obvious that the Washington Post does not have a clue about Norwegian politics, says Listhaug news agency NTB after the US major newspaper placed her on a list of “Europe’s Donald Trumps”.
The same list contains some of Europe’s best-known radical right and immigration critical politicians, such as the Dutch Geert Wilders and French Marine Le Pen. The newspaper believes that right-wing populist parties are advancing, both in Europe and the United States, due to the migration crisis, globalization and increased unemployment.
“After she became Norway’s immigration minister in December, she has taken a tough position, which includes deportation of rejected asylum seekers to Russia in freezing weather – something which may have been a violation of international law. Several say that she can reach the top of the party, “the newspaper said in the discussion.
Listhaug emphasizes that the Progress Party was founded to strongly reduce taxes and government intervention.
– We believe in individual freedom. Many of the parties in this article have an one-sided emphasis on opposition to immigration and want a big government, are against free trade and want high taxes and fees. The allegations fall on their own absurdity, she says.
