Man arrested for rape in Harstad

Police have arrested and charged a man for raping a woman in her 20s from Harstad at a city hotel on Tuesday evening. The accused is not a Norwegian national.

The woman alerted hotel staff that she had been subjected to an assault just before 23.00. Employees and the police were notified, and the police arrested a man in his 30s.

The was not any relationship between the woman and the man before the assault took place.

‘We have been given a preliminary explanation from the offended woman. The accused is not yet questioned, but we hope to do that during the course of Wednesday. He has not yet been appointed a defence lawyer’, said operations manager, Karl Erik Thomassen of Troms police to news agency NTB.

Crime Technicians were at the hotel Tuesday night to ensure direction.

‘The accused will be questioned after he has undergone a medical examination. The woman is being cared for by health professionals.

So far we only know that the two agreed to meet at the hotel, but they didn’t know each other previously. Neither of the two are known to the police from before’, said police spokesman Thomassen Harstad Tidende.
