A welder working on a Statoil rig at the Samsung shipyard in Geoje in South Korea, died before the weekend as a result of injuries he sustained in an accident in April.
– It is with great sadness we received the news that a man has died following an accident at one of our Cat J rigs. The man was hired by a subcontractor to Samsung shipyard, media contact Ola Anders Skauby of Statoil says to Stavanger Aftenblad.
Cat J-rigs are rigs that can operate in harsher environments and drill wells down to 10,000 meters.
The accident occurred on April 21 during the construction of the new rig.
A group representative has traveled down to the yard to go over the accident, but according to Skauby there is no reason to believe that there are more victims of accidents among the workers at the South Korean shipyard than at other shipyards.
