The Supreme Court upholds the sentence of one year in prison for a man who thought he smuggled 30,500 Valium pills. The tablets turned out to be asthma medicine without any drug effects.

The 51-year-old man was stopped by police in Kristiansand in 2012 when he and a friend came from Thailand. They carried 30,540 tablets which they thought were so-called blue valium, and the 51-year-old confessed this in police interrogations.

He was sentenced to one-year imprisonment both by the district court and the appellate court for what is called a failed attempt importation of Valium. Because it turned out to be asthma medicine, the punishment is set lower than in similar cases in smuggling of valium.

The defendant appealed to the Supreme Court against the sentence, but the sentence of one year is thus standing.
