Each year over 4,000 Norwegians is affected with bowel cancer, and four people die every day. The Cancer Society believes that a national bowel cancer screening can reduce mortality by up to 300 people a year.
Apart from this kind of cancer, the most deadly type of cancer is colorectal cancer, and already in 2003 the EU health ministers unanimously recommended introducing bowel cancer screening. In Norway, a pilot project with this screening was first started in 2012 in Akershus, Buskerud and Ostfold.
Now NCS’s General Anne Lise Ryel thinks that it is time to make the scheme permanent for the whole country.
