The fourth anniversary of the MH17 marked with empty chairs

To mark that it is four years since the Malaysian Airline route MH17 was shot down over Ukraine, the organization Maidan placed 298 empty chairs near the Russian Embassy in Oslo.

The chairs were placed a short distance from the Russian Embassy. The Maidan organization, which works to spread news and information from Ukraine, is behind the marking. They demand justice for the MH17 victims.

The chairs were arranged like seats in an aeroplane, and placards with the victims’ names were placed on them. The Ukrainian ambassador, Vjatjeslav Jatsjuk, put flowers on the chairs.

Russian armed forces

The MH17 was shot down over eastern Ukraine on its way from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, and several investigators have found evidence that there were regular Russian armed forces behind the atrocity.

A similar marking was held in the Netherlands earlier this year. At the same time, the Netherlands and Australia made it clear that they will “hold Russia legally responsible for their part in shooting down the MH17”.

Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sergei Lavrov, responded by saying that the Netherlands had not provided any evidence that Russia was behind the shooting.

All of the 298 persons on board lost their lives. 193 were from the Netherlands, 43 from Malaysia and 28 from Australia.
