The government gives 5.6 million to the expansion of the Sahara Forest Project, which seeks to initiate food production in desert areas.

– This new contribution from the Climate and Environment Ministry ensures a significant increase in our level of ambition for Jordan, says project manager Joakim Hauge.

The award was presented by Climate and Environment Minister Vidar Helgesen at the UN climate meeting in Marrakech in Morocco on Monday.

The money will be used for a new facility in the Jordanian port city of Aqaba, said Sahara Forest Project.

Before then, the Sahara Forest Project built a plant in Qatar. The concept is to use solar power and saline to grow food and other crops and produce fresh water in desert areas.

The environmental organization Bellona is one of several owners of the Sahara Forest Project, which has also received support from the EU and USA.
