Mona Juul appointed new UN ambassador

Diplomat and former Secretary of State, Mona Juul, was appointed Norway’s new UN ambassador on a national council on Friday.

 

Mona Juul (59) had previously been deputy commander in the Norwegian UN delegation in New York. Juul had also served as Norwegian ambassador to Israel, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, and Secretary of State in the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. She is coming from the post of ambassador to London.

The nomination took place in government councils on Friday. Juul joins at the time the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will decide.
Peace treaty
Juul is familiar with the process of negotiating the Middle East peace agreement, where she was central with, among others, her husband, Terje Rød-Larsen.

The process ended with Israel and the Palestinian PLO signing the so-called Oslo agreement in Washington in 1993.
The position as UN ambassador has been vacant since Tore Hattrem was appointed new Foreign Council in June.
At the beginning of August, Aftenposten newspaper wrote that Juul was the only applicant for the job. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs would not answer questions concerning if they had considered candidates other than Juul to work.

Important in UN combat

Norway has applied for a seat in the UN Security Council in the period 2021-2022 and has launched a campaign to get one of the ten non-permanent seats.

The UN ambassador will play an important role in verifying this.Norway has been a member of the Security Council four times earlier, the last time in 2001-2002.
