More foreigners and fewer Norwegians in Svalbard

Longyearbyen and Ny-Ålesund, together have a total of 2,310 inhabitants. There are 96 more people than at the turn of the new year and a new record.

 

At the same time, the proportion of northern Norwegians fell from 41 percent to 26 percent, a decline of more than 300 persons. The number of backgrounds from southern Norway has increased from 950 to 1040, showing population figures as of 1 July this year.

The proportion of foreign citizens is 32 percent, and foreigners account for most of the growth, and in some age groups there are more foreigners than Norwegians, Statistics Norway (SSB) reports. In the age groups between 20 and 34 years, more than 40 percent are foreigners, and of women 25-29 years and men 30 to 34 are over half foreigners.
