So far in 2018 there are 54 mountain fox litters and at least 269 puppies in this country. This is heading towards being the best year since the monitoring started 15 years ago.

“It’s gratifying that over a number of years, mountain foxes have responded so  positively to the measures we have taken to prevent the species from dying out,” says Yngve Svarte, Director of the Environment, in a press release.

“Increased incidence of leamons and rodents in some areas during 2018 has also been of great importance, since these are at the top of the mountain fox menu,” he continues.

Up till now, 2014 has been the peak year for the number of documented litters of mountain foxes. Then 50 litters were recorded.

In order to do something about the state of these mountain foxes, the environmental authorities launched a program in 2003. Since 2005 – when the breeding station at Dovrefjell was started – hundreds of foxes have been released into the wild.
