Almost half of respondents are “largely positive” to banning cars in the capital’s city center. Only one in three of respondents were negative.

But while only one-third of Oslo’s population as a whole were negative, almost half of the tradespeople were, according to Aftenposten newspaper. The study was conducted by Sweco and Norstat for Oslo municipality.

The investigation was undertaken after concrete measures were introduced, such as the removal of parking spaces and the closing of streets for transit had been completed. Businesses believes that the availability of goods vehicles, crafts people and cars has deteriorated too far.

The proportion that said that it is “very attractive” to run business activity in the center has fallen from 55% last year to 42% this year. While landlords and dining places looked forward to the future, the stores were the most negative.

Among the Oslo residents, around 18% said that they are “largely neutral” to the concept and consequences of car-free city life, while
25% in business said the same.
