The police will also issue electronic ID when the new national ID card will be issued next year. This will reduce crime, the justice minister believes.
After years of postponements and delays, since the mid-2000s, the new national ID card will be launched next year. On Tuesday the Ministry of Justice reported that the new card will also be issued with electronic identity (eID) by police.
– EID on national ID card will have the same security level as a passport, and can be used for digital services in public and private sector, the Ministry writes in a press release.
The card will be issued by the police passport office and will receive the same security level as passports. Unlike most European countries, Norway has not had any other national identity documents than passports. Now, the idea is that a new card also will meet the future need for secure identification electronically.
– Now we will get an online identity under public control, with the same level of safety as a passport. This will help to reduce identity crime and the use of false identities, the Minister of Justice and Public Security, Anders Anundsen, says.
