An old psychiatric hospital on Veum in Fredrikstad may become the largest refugee asylum center in Norway if the UDI’s plans are implemented, NRK news reports.

An old psychiatric hospital on Veum in Fredrikstad may become the largest refugee asylum center in Norway if the UDI’s plans are implemented, NRK news reports.
According to the Directorate of Immigration (UDI) there may be space for up to 1,200 asylum seekers in the building’s old premises, which were vacated last year.
“It has a large area that can accommodate many people. There are many different buildings, many common rooms and a large outdoor area at this location. There is public transportation down to Fredrikstad. This must be one of the best locations we have as of today,” says Regional Director Siv Kjelstrup of UDI to NRK.
Mayor Jon-Ivar Nygård believes 1,200 is a lot of people and has already met with UDI.
