For the first time scientists have found plastic in the stomachs of Norwegian cod. A total of 27 percent of the cod that swim in the harbor of Bergen, have swallowed plastic, according to a recent study.

Greenpeace believes that Norway must introduce a ban on micro plastic now.

– Cod in 2015 was the main economic fish species in Norway, and it also plays a central role in the ecosystem in the Barents Sea and along the Norwegian coast, says researcher David Eidsvoll in Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA).

He says the findings should cause unrest. Some stocks of cod are also on the World Conservation Union’s Red List.

What effect plastic has on cod, was not investigated in this study.
