Next year schools will test the swimming abilities of all Norwegian children

Starting next year, all students in the fourth grade will tested for their swimming skills.

Minister Torbjørn Røe Isaksen stressed to TV2 news that “all children should learn to swim” – and that it is the responsibility of the local authorities to ensure that this hapens.
In practice this means that all children have to learn diving, swimming for 200 meters and life saving.
Starting next year  the government and supporting parties the Christian Democrats and the Liberals will therefore introduces tests of the swimming skills of the pupils in order to uncover which municipalities do not give their students good enough swimming lessons.
– It is very worrying when we get figures showing that Norwegian children in some surveys are among the worst swimmers in Europe, says Isaksen.
