When the cars disappear from the center of Oslo, NHO in the metropolitan region will fill the space with more housing.

The housing situation underlying the initiative from the Regional Director Nina Solli from NHO Oslo and Akershus, writes the newspaper Dagsavisen.

The aim is that a problem which has built up over several years can be solved by replacing cars with housing.

– Now there are about 1,700 people living within Ring 1 in compare with Brussel which already has a pedestrianized center and having about 100,000 people living there in an area which is only one-quarter of Ring 1, says Solli.

She believes the solution lies primarily in building height and add more floors to existing buildings.

– We need a housing policy which increasingly is oriented towards the crowded areas where the request for housing is highest.

At the same time the pace of housing construction is ensured through more effective planning processes, faster building permits, simplification and measures to reduce construction costs, explains Solli.

She says the capital needs 7,000 new homes a year until 2025 to keep pace with population growth.
