Oslo Right went against the recommendation of the program committee and decided to go on for a ban on garments that cover the full face in public institutions.
On Saturday, Oslo Right proceeded with a proposal to introduce a national ban, wrote the newspaper VG. The head of Oslo Conservative program committee, Stefan Hegglund, confirmed to the newspaper that the proposal was approved against the program committee’s recommendation.

– Lack of clarity on how this will be implemented and what can be defined as public institutions are part of the reason the program committee did not recommend the proposal, he wrote in an SMS to the newspaper.

Among those who voted for the ban are former Oslo mayor and newly appointed secretary Fabian Stang.

– This means that we will request the conservative party to reconsider the issue at the national congress. Facial expression is an important communication factor. It is understood that I look at this as a minimal problem in Norway. Nevertheless, I think we should have clear rules when questions arise about garments covering the face, says Stang.

Ingjerd Schou, the Conservative immigration spokesperson said the party accepts complains for the ban of whole face covering garments in schools. It applies to nikab and burka, but not to hijab. She says the party has not taken a position on where they stand in terms of Oslo Conservative decision.
