Pakistan’s folk hero Abdul Sattar Edhi (88) is dead

Abdul Sattar Edhi, founder of Pakistan’s largest charity, died on Friday, said the family. He was 88 years old.

Philanthropist Edhi died of kidney failure, said his son Faisal. He died in hospital in Karachi, Pakistan’s most populous city, after a long battle with illness.

Edhi started a foundation that is Pakistan’s largest volunteer organization. Edhi Foundation operates hospitals, maternity wards, orphanages, shelters and centers for legal aid.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has announced that there will be a state funeral and a national day of mourning to honor the memory of the man who devoted his life to help the vulnerable and the poor.

– We have lost a great servant of humanity, says Sharif.
