Hereditary breast cancer is the theme of this year’s Pink Ribbon campaign, which opened Saturday.

The 18th time the campaign has been held, but this is the first time it will draw attention to hereditary breast cancer, according to the Cancer Society.
The aim is to increase knowledge about hereditary genetic defects, so people that need follow-up get it.
“Hereditary genetic defect is responsible for nearly 150 breast cancer cases each year. Our hope is that more people who are carriers of these gene mutations will know it and get help.
“It will save lives. Active surveillance or preventive surgery before symptoms occur reduce the risk of cancer and improves the prognosis if the cancer does occur,” says Secretary General Anne Lise Ryel of the Cancer Society.
Each year, more than 3,300 women and a small number of men in Norway contract breast cancer.
