The Polar ship Maud has arrived in Asker

The famous Polar ship Maud arrived at Vollen in Asker on Saturday, the place where she was built and launched in 1917.

The arrival of the ship was celebrated at the Oslo Fjord Museum. Maud will visit the Bunnefjord and Roald Amundsen’s home on Sunday morning and then continue onwards to the city centre of Oslo in the early afternoon.

– It makes for some emotions, but we keep a straight face. It is a pre-history that demands respect and it has affected the family to a fair degree. It is probably too expensive to restore her to the condition she was originally in, but I think it is good that she will be preserved, says Johan Leon Amundsen to NRK. He is the grandchild of one of Roald Amundsen’s brothers.

Movie

Maud is named after the Norwegian Queen, Maud, and was built on behalf of Roald Amundsen to be used on one of his expeditions to the Arctic. The boat sank in shallow waters north of Canada in 1931 but was refloated in 2016 after spending 85 years under the arctic ocean.

A comprehensive movie about Roald Amundsen is in the making and will be released in February. The film is directed by Espen Sandberg, the man behind the movies «Kon-Tiki» and «Max Manus». The film will contain several scenes from the long and arduous Maud expedition.

Lots of excitement

– Virtually everybody knows that Amundsen was the first human to reach the South Pole, but not everyone is aware of the airship Norge and the long journey with his own Polar ship Maud, it is great that this finally gets attention. That’s precisely why our film deals with his entire life – he did so much exciting and was on so many expeditions, says Sandberg to NTB.

– We built the interior of the polar ship and large parts of the deck while the rest is digitally made. The film will give the audience a unique opportunity to join in on Maud’s journey through the Northeast Passage, where Roald, among other things, was attacked by a polar bear, he says.
