Last year, 63 foreigners in Norwegian prisons were transferred to prisons in their home countries. The figure is the highest ever, and represents 41.091 days less of imprisonment in Norwegian prisons.
On average the 63 inmates were to serve time in prison for 652 more days–just over one year and nine months–when they were transferred.
–It is very pleasing that the number of prison transfers have increased over the past year. This is in line with the policy guiding the correctional work , and it frees up spaces in Norwegian prisons, Director Marianne Vollan in Criminal care Directorate says.
Poland is at the top of the list for prison transfers and transferred 15 prisoners from Norwegian prisons. 13 was transferred to Romania, twelve to the Netherlands and ten to Lithuania. The rest is distributed in eight other countries.
Not all inmates in Norwegian prisons can be transferred to foreign countries, and a number of criteria must be met for a prison transfer to be made.
