Radium Hospital in Oslo is so plagued with rats that employees are encouraged to keep the toilet lid closed.

Oslo University has confirmed the rat problem to TV 2. The hospitals internal communication at Radium Hospital writes that it is the Cancer Center at Oslo University Hospital is the cause of the problem, as they have carried out improvements within the municipal sewer system “which leads to more rats coming into the system.”

– The presence of rats in the sewage systems in all cities is nothing new.

We are doing all we can to deal with the problem, says Hedda Holth, Communications Consultant at Oslo University.

Together with pest control company Anticimex, several measures have been initiated to reduce the problem.

The hospital reminds its employees to not put any food particles or liquid nutrition in toilets or sinks, as this attracts rats. They have also encouraged employees to flush the toilet before using it and to keep the toilet lid closed after use.

In the autumn, the Water and Sewerage Authority in Oslo completed the rehabilitation work that had been going on for the past three years. The agency does not believe that this is the reason for the hospital’s rat problems.

– There is nothing to suggest that our rehabilitation should have contributed to the increased in rats. On the contrary, the pipes are now watertight, says Tone Spieler, Communications Consultant at the Water and Sewerage Authority.
