Norwegian-Swedish venue on Copacabana – When the Olympic Flame is lit on August 5, the Seaman’s Church  and Church of Sweden open  the doors of a joint Scandinavian meeting place in Rio de Janeiro, similar to their meeting places at the Olympic Games in Sydney, Athens and Beijing.

-Due to the location of our permanent Seaman’s church in town, we  also want to have a more central place to meet visiting and resident Norwegians during this year’s summer Olympics,  foreign manager in Sjømannskirken, Asbjørn Vilkensen, says.

Kafe at Copacabana
Because of this, the two organizations will employ parts of the pavement restaurant ‘Devassa “while the sporting event is in progress. The venue is located just off the promenade at Copacabana in the Brazilian samba city.

– We believe and hope many will come back here. We’ll show TV2’s Olympics broadcasts on a big screen and have  Scandinavian services.

Safety Seminar and water bike
The Seaman’s Church will also organizes a value seminar at the Norwegian Consul General on the subject “When our values meet a foreign culture”.

The Seamen’s Church has been present at all the summer and winter Olympics since 1996. This is the first time the Olympic Games will be held in South America.

-In Addition to the venue on Cobacabana we will also make our presence known on the famous boardwalk with our own Olympic bike! We’ll be handing out water and information from that, Asbjørn Vilkensen says.
