Lubna Mehdi has been named this years ‘role model for her commitment to deaf children and young people with immigrant backgrounds’. She received the award with Crown Prince Haakon present on Monday.
The award ceremony took place at the Nobel Peace Center, and Children and Equality Minister Solveig Horne (FRP) accounted for the actual ceremony.
Lubna Mehdi was born in Pakistan and came to Norway with her family when she was 18 months old.
“Lubna is a role model for children and young people because she is an active participant in the deaf and immigrant society and thus is a role model to children and young people can follow in the footsteps of her.
She has put in a great effort by volunteering to give children and youth the opportunity to participate in society on an equal footing with everyone else regardless of disabilities and cultural backgrounds, “writes the jury in their reasoning.
“The winner is a good role model for both deaf children and young people with immigrant backgrounds, but also for all other children and young people who for various reasons find it difficult to be included in society.
Through her work she promotes equality and opposes discrimination on grounds of disability, and is therefore a role model for us all, ” they added.
