It is important not to push Britain into Brexit process until a way forward has been agreed upon, Prime Minister Erna Solberg says.
On Tuesday Solberg will be in Brussels to participate in the conservative parties’ preliminary meeting before the EU summit. Her message will be that everybody should calm down .
– The main thing now is to find solutions that are good for both the UK and EU, Solberg says .
In the EU, many have advocated putting pressure on Britain for speedy triggering the EU Treaty Article 50 and get the withdrawal process started. But Solberg believes it is prudent to give the UK more time.
– I thin you have to agree on a time table for this process and not put any pressure the UK until they have agreed on the way forward, she says, and believes this will help to clarify the uncertainty caused by the Brexit.
It is a challenge that there are a lot of different agendas in the leave camp, and that there are disagreements about the type of connection that the United Kingdom is to have to the internal market of EU in the future, she acknowledges.
Solberg will emphasize to her fellow politicians in the sister parties to Høyre that the EU now needs to be given the time and space to take care of the real political challenges.
– My greatest fear has always been that you spend much time on internal organization, negotiation and discussions, and that there is not enough time left to tackle the big challenges, she says.
