Prime Minister Erna Solberg believes her party should be in favour of a ban on twin abortions. At the same time she is in favour of self-determination in general, and is repeating her wish for negotiation with KrF.

– I mean it. This is primarily due to the consideration for the second foetus because there is a danger associated with abortion. At the same time, there is also an ethical dilemma when choosing “said Solberg to the newspaper Dagen to the question about twin abortions.

Erna Solberg emphasises at that she is also pro self-determined abortions, but is uncertain about where the line should be drawn.

“We have got the right to elective abortion because we acknowledge that the woman is best at making these assessments herself, but we have, for example, said that you should not be able to choose based on gender. If you do not know anything about the gender, should you then be able to chose whether you want one or two children based on what you know about the characteristics of your child be crucial,  asks Solberg ?

The prime minister opened last week for the government to enter into negotiations with KrF  regarding changes to the abortion Act. The background was a challenge by KrF Deputy Kjell Ingolf Ropstad. KrF wants a special ban on twin abortions, as well as for abortions after the 12th week also for seriously impaired babies, such as Down’s syndrome.

“I think this debate benefits from moving away from the level where we say : Do not touch the self-determination rule, onto where  we can discuss these issues and see what is possible under some clear conditions. But I can not give any guarantee of a breakthrough in the negotiations. I have therefore been very clear that I speak as the leader of the Conservarives and that Hoyre would  be willing to discuss these issues with KrF, ” Solberg told the newspaper.
