The fight against students dropping out starts in the first grade,  Prime Minister Erna Solberg says. The Education Association  is asking the government provide more teachers and fewer students per class.

Monday morning the prime minister met  120 students starting at school at Løren School in Oslo. In her speech and talks she emphasised the responsibility of children, schools and parents to jointly to ensure a good learning environment.

That so many young people are dropping out of videregående( similar to junior college or the sixth forms of comprehensive school) is the main problem in Norwegian schools, says Solberg.

– The fight against students dropping out starts in the early years at school. The foundation of whether you enjoy  being at school and enjoy learning, starts with the students  being given help to cope with school life from early on, the prime minister said.

–  In addition to more teachers, who can  help those who need it from early on – instead of waiting for the students to get a diagnosis,  we also need more of other kinds of resources, she adds.
