“The US National Security Advisor comes with regrettable statements about the International Criminal Court (ICC),” said Foreign Minister Ine Eriksen Søreide.
US National Security Adviser John Bolton threatened Monday to prosecute judges at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, The Netherlands.
The background for the outcome is that the ICC is considering investigation of allegations of war crimes committed by US forces in Afghanistan.
“The United States is free to choose not to be a state party to the court, and as a non-member, the United States also has no duty to cooperate with the ICC. However, John Bolton’s statements are regrettable,” says Søreide in a statement to NTB.
The Foreign Minister reminds us that Norway has been one of the ICC supporters right from the start.
“The court has an important mandate to work against impunity for the most serious international crimes, where the states themselves are unable to do this,” she said.
However, Norway’s NATO Allied USA has long been skeptical about the ICC. Like countries such as Israel and Russia, the United States has never joined the court.
