Eriksen Søreide meets with Russia’s foreign minister

Norway’s Foreign Minister, Ine Eriksen Søreide of Høyre (H), met the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, in Milan.

The talks between the two took place during the OSCE foreign ministerial meetings in Milan in Italy on Thursday. The agenda included the situation in Ukraine, South Ossetia, Transdnjestr, and Nagarno – Karabakh, as well as dialogue with Mediterranean countries on issues such as terrorism and migration.

“I had a good meeting with Foreign Minister Lavrov. We talked about the bilateral relationship and discussed foreign policy, and security policy issues like the situation in the Azores and the INF agreement,” said Eriksen Søreide.

She also invited her Russian counterpart to the forthcoming 75th anniversary of the liberation of East Finnmark, which will be marked in Kirkenes on the 25th of October next year.

Many had urged the Norwegian authorities to invite Russia’s President, Vladimir Putin, to the forthcoming anniversary event, but at the end of October, the Foreign Ministry announced to Aftenposten newspaper that it became incumbent on them to invite Lavrov instead.
