Norwegian sports profile sentenced for trafficking

A 50-years-old man is in the Oslo District Court sentenced to three months in prison for human trafficking. According to the verdict, he smuggled three women into Norway under the cover of them being au pairs.

In court, the man admitted having brought the three women into Norway from May 2009 until May 2013. To the Norwegian authorities, he explained that the purpose of the women’s entry into Norway was that they should work as au pairs for him. Instead, the women helped to take care of his seriously ill mother, writes ABC Nyheter.

The court considers that the man, who has been on the national team in his sport and participated in the Olympic Games for Norway, must have known that care of the elderly is not covered by the au pair scheme.

The man and his wife were also charged with helping nine Philippine citizens to get illegal residence in Norway by providing them with either work or housing. According to the accusation, these offences continued from December 2008 until December 2017.

In court, the man was convicted of having helped a total of nine persons to an illegal residence in Norway and for having six of the women working for him without the necessary work permits. The man’s wife, who did not acknowledge guilt, was sentenced to 30 days in prison for assistance to illegal residency and use of illegal workers. Her prison sentence was made conditional with two years of probation.
