Principals in Stavanger will attend courses in serious incidents, such as school shootings.

This autumn all primary and secondary schools in Stavanger will begin with a comprehensive program, all principals will go through courses and exercises to practice on what to do in serious violent incidents. Several principals veiw this as a positive measure, reported NRK news Rogaland.

– We have been waiting to have this issue put on the agenda. There are definitely deficiencies in the schools ability to deal with this type of situation, and we were wondering what we should do should it arise, said former principal Stein Endresen of kannik ungdomsskole in Stavanger to NRK.

Commissioner Jørn Pedersen in Stavanger believes it is important that schools are prepared, both for students and employee safety.

– There is a active debate about this in the community. Fortunately, we have little experience with these situations here in Norway. We have had situations where we’ve feared that something might happen, and it is important to have clear procedures, he said.

In addition to the courses and exercises they will undergo, the municipality will now state what physical safeguards schools should have.
