NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg praised the Turks for pouring into the streets in defense of democracy during the attempted coup on Friday night.

“I commend the strong support of the people and all political parties for defending democracy and the democratically elected government in Turkey,” said Stoltenberg on Twitter.

Stoltenberg urged calm, restraint and respect for Turkey’s democratic institutions and constitution.

Stoltenberg said he has talked with the NATO commander, Gen. Curtis Scaprrotti, who states that all NATO personnel in Turkey are safe.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called on people to join together in the streets to defend democracy while the last remnants of the attempted coup are brought down. He says that the danger is not yet over.

News agencies report that civilians marched the streets during the night in protest against the coup makers, which in some cases have led to attacked coup soldiers who already surrendered.
