After the heavy summer drought this year, it has to rain more in the autumn than it has for 100 years to reach the normal filling level in Norwegian water reservoirs.
In the first week of August, the water level in the Norwegian water reservoirs was 60.9%. Typically, the fill rate is 80% at this time of the year, reported NRK news.
“If it rains 50% more than normal for the rest of the year, it will be normal at the year’s end,” said senior advisor, Gunnar Bartnes, at Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE).
In Norway, it has only rained so much in autumn on two occasions, 1978 and 1983, and then only in Western Norway. That Norway might now get twice the amount of rain this autumn is, therefore, unlikely believes scientist, Helga Tajet at the Meteorological Institute.
“The highest measured rainfall for Norway as a whole is 40% more than usual for the autumn on average,” she said.
