Around half of those surveyed support the proposal of introducing neutral tobacco packages, a new study shows.

To prevent children and adolescents from starting smoking or taking snuff the Ministry of Health has proposed that all smoke packages and snuff boxes sold has to use the same neutral color and a standardized logo. According to a new study from the Institute of Public Health  half of the respondents are in favor of the measure, NRK news reported.
– I’ve never met any adults who smoke who want their children to do the same,  Health Minister Bent Høie says, adding that his goal is to create a tobacco-free generation in the future.
– In Norway, there are many young people who take snuff, so we have a new tobacco dependent generation growing up in Norway, says Høie.
Tuesday is the World’s No Tobacco Day  and the World Health Organization (WHO) launches the World’s No Tobacco Day from Norway. WHO asks member states to make themselves ready for standardized tobacco packaging.
In Australia, which introduced the measure in 2012, they have had good experiences in doing so,  researcher Karl Erik Lund at the NIPH says.
– They have seen a decline in consumption and smoking habits that probably can be attributed to the measure. We have also made our own experiments, which shows that  tobacco with standardized packaging appeal less to smokers ,  Lund says.
