Swiss voters voted no to the proposal that foreign nationals who have committed minor offences twice may be expelled from the country without taking their life situation into consideration.
Preliminary results after Sunday’s referendum indicated that 57 percent had voted against the proposal. Even before the results of all the country’s cantons were ready, it became clear that a majority of the cantons had voted down the proposal, which was promoted by the right-wing populist People’s Party (SVP).
The proposal was that foreign nationals, including those born in Switzerland, should be expelled automatically after being convicted for minor offences provided they have been more convicted than once in a decade.
Both perjury, verbal abuse of the police, possession of drugs, fighting and speeding would according to SVP’s proposal qualify for expulsion.
