Systematic control of EU citizens at the perimeter

EU citizenship should be obtained through mandatory and systematic control at the Union’s external border. Control means that all passengers should be checked against relevant databases.

On Monday, the European Parliament and the Council of Ministers were agreed on sharpening controls, which will be introduced in border regulations for the Schengen area.

‘In the wake of the terrorist attacks in Paris on November 13, 2015, we proposed the introduction of systematic monitoring of all citizens at all external borders, so that we know exactly who crosses our borders’, said the EU Commissioner for Home Affairs, Dimitris Avramopoulos.

He is pleased that the two institutions have agreed to introduce amendments, and that the Commission expects that this will now happen quickly.

‘In addition to the creation of a European border and coast guard in October, this is an important step in efforts to preserve the freedom of movement within the Schengen area and ensuring the safety of citizens.

Travelers from ‘third world’ countries are already subject to systematic documentation and security checks when entering the Schengen area.

What is new here is that EU citizens will also be checked against relevant databases, including cooperation within Schengen and with Interpol’.
